Boston Municipal Elections FAQs

Voting in Boston’s local elections is one of the most powerful ways to shape the future of your neighborhood and our city. This page is your go-to voter registration and election guide—covering everything from how to register to vote in Boston, the difference between district and at-large City Councilors, key election dates, and what you need to know for the upcoming Boston City Council primary and general elections. Whether you're a first-time voter or just need a quick refresher, we've got you covered.

What is a City Councilor?

A City Councilor is an elected official who represents the people of Boston. They create local laws, approve budgets, and advocate for city services like housing, public safety, and education.

What’s the difference between a District City Councilor and an At-Large Councilor?

  • District Councilors represent specific neighborhoods (Boston has 9 districts).

  • At-Large Councilors represent the entire city and are elected by all Boston voters.

Alexandra is running At-Large — meaning every Boston voter can cast a vote for her to hold 1 of 4 available seats. Vote #3 on the ballot!

When is the Primary Election?

The Boston Municipal Preliminary Election (Primary) is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, 2024

This election narrows down the field of candidates for the General Election on Tuesday, November 5, 2024

*You must be registered to vote at least 10 days before each election to participate.
